Syracuse Area School Gets Asbestos
Asbestos abatement at Smith Road Elementary School in North Syracuse, New York is set to be completed by the end of the month. The $359,000 project, which began last week, includes removal of floor tile in the building.
JAG Environmental of North Syracuse was awarded the abatement. Although school is not in session, the building will remain closed for the duration of the project.
The abatement is part of a larger renovation project estimated at $17 million. The job will renovate the school, which has not been updated since it was constructed in 1956. Contractors for the rest of the project will be awarded on August 16.
Asbestos is known to cause mesothelioma, an aggressive form of cancer than affects the lining of the lungs, stomach or heart. Palliative treatments can be used however the disease is usually fatal.
The Smith Road project will be paid for largely by building aid from New York State.
