The office of the Massachusetts Attorney General recently released information stating a Grand Jury has indicted Mayo Group Development, LLC for improper removal of asbestos in a downtown Worcester building.
In February of 2007 employees form the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) became aware of material being tossed out of a window at Worcester Commons. On further inspection, it was confirmed asbestos was in the debris. Authorities later found that the asbestos-contaminated waste was being sent to a landfill not suitable to handle the dangerous carcinogen.
The Mayo Group is indicted on charges of violating the Clean Air Act because it did not file the removal with the Massachusetts DEP. Also, the company did not comply with asbestos emissions control procedures and will be charged with improper disposal of asbestos waste. It is believed that the Mayo Group even removed asbestos in areas of the building were people were living, putting residents and workers at risk.
Asbestos exposure can lead to deadly diseases such as malignant mesothelioma which can go undetected for up to 50 years and is usually only noticed in its final stages. Unfortunately, most treatments cannot cure the disease and many of those diagnosed with mesothelioma do not survive.
The health risk associated with asbestos exposure is the main reason for conducting a full assessment before removing any materials that could contain the mineral. The Mayo Group will be summonsed for arraignment at a later date in Worcester Superior Court.
