whoThe International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) made an announcement this week reconfirming that all commercial asbestos fibers cause lung cancer and mesothelioma. This includes the most commercially used asbestos, chrysotile. The IARC also announced there was significant evidence that exposure to asbestos is a cause of ovarian cancer as well as laryngeal cancer.

The IARC is a part of the World Health Organization, and is considered the leading international cancer research agency. Dr. Richard Lemen, Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization’s Science Advisory Co-Chairman, is pleased with the IARC’s backing. Back in 1976 Dr. Lemen worked on the first group that confirmed all forms of asbestos cause lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Asbestos was a popularly used product in construction and shipyards because of its high insulation qualities. In the 1970’s after it was found to be hazardous, the government implemented regulations on the use of asbestos. Due to its long latency period, symptoms of asbestos-related diseases like mesothelioma or asbestosis take between 20 and 50 years too appear. Currently there is no cure for the illnesses.

Linda Reinstein, Executive Director and Co-Founder of the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization, was pleased with the timely findings of the IARC, released the week before the annual Asbestos Awareness Conference and Remembrance Brunch in Manhattan Beach California. “The more knowledge we have about asbestos dangers, the more power we have to effectively fight the deadly mineral and someday end its lethal abilities,” said Reinstein. The conference will be held in recognition of National Asbestos Awareness Week from March 27-29th.
