W.R. Grace Cleans Up Own Mess in Easthampton

Chemical conglomerate W.R. Grace and Oldon Limited Partnership have agreed to fund the clean-up of asbestos on their former 2.3 acre worksite in Easthampton, MA.

Between 1963 and 1993, the companies used the site to produce  Zonolite attic insulation and fireproofing material from asbestos-contaminated vermiculite.

The land is now used for residential, commercial and agricultural purposes. A vacant Oldon facility is still standing on the property and will be demolished in the project. The total costs for the task is estimated at $833,000. Grace and Oldon will also reimburse the EPA $72,537 from previous cleanups.

Asbestos is known to cause mesothelioma, a dangerous form of cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, stomach or heart. Often diagnosed in its advanced stages, the disease carries a low survival rate and limited treatment.
