Salinas Courthouse On Track to Reopen after Asbestos Abatement

The north wing of the Salinas Courthouse in Salinas, California is slated to reopen October 12 after closing for over four years after asbestos was released during construction. Since then, the county has spent $71.6 million to revamp the four-story 97,236-square-foot structure.

Superior Court presiding Judge Adrienne Grover said court operations will be moved to the north wing over Columbus day weekend. During the abatement and reconstruction the east and west wings of the building held court as well as several off site portables.

Asbestos exposure is the main cause of mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, stomach or heart. As the disease is often found in its advanced stages, it is hard to treat and often fatal.

The new wing features 11 courtrooms, executive offices, new areas for court-related business, family waiting rooms and drug screening rooms.
