Potsdam Civic Center to Undergo Asbestos Abatement
Asbestos abatement in the basement of the Civic Center in Potsdam, NY is set to begin this month. The project will remove roughly 16 feet of asbestos piping insulation.
The contract was awarded to LVI Environmental Service of Massena, NY. Village Administrator Michael D. Weil said that the project is part of an effort to build a community resource center in the basement of the building.
Asbestos is known to cause mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, stomach and heart. The disease is often found in its advanced stages making it difficult to treat and often fatal.
The Potsdam Civic Center underwent several other abatements in November totaling $50,000.
