Potential Elementary School Site Contaminated
The proposed site for the new Clifton Elementary School in Fairfax County Virginia has been identified as having naturally occurring asbestos.
The area in question is next to Liberty Middle School, built in 2002 with the knowledge of nearby asbestos. Parents worry that the currently- dormant asbestos under the ground will be stirred up and released into the air when construction begins.
The school board has assured parents that they would not put students at risk, yet parent and executive of an environmental engineering firm, Tom VanBlaricom has doubts.
“The danger is in the construction process,” VanBlaricom said.
Exposure to asbestos can cause mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer that attacks the lining of the lings, stomach or heart. There is no cure for mesothelioma and only palliative treatments exist.
The new site for Clifton Elementary School will be decided on July 8.
