Pipe Explosion Spews Asbestos in Boston Area
An underground pipe owned by Trigen Energy in Boston’s Harrison Avenue area exploded Wednesday covering trees and cars with asbestos laden dust. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
Workers, protected in hazmat suits, are now power washing dozens of cars and trees in an effort to decontaminate the area. Initial air tests reported that extremely low particulate matter meaning the air is still safe.
Asbestos is known to cause mesothelioma, a deadly form of cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, stomach or heart. The disease can take decades to manifest and symptoms are often overlooked. Sadly there is no cure for mesothelioma, although palliative treatments are available.
Trigen Energy has provided rental cars to those individuals whose cars were affected and are working on the decontamination process.
