Indiana Fire Raises Asbestos Concerns

A fire in a former meat packing plant has federal officials worried about asbestos exposure. The blaze has been burning in the old Emge plant in Fort Branch, Indiana since Saturday.

The fire is particularly difficult as the building is made of concrete and brick. The fire department does not have the equipment needed to get to the fire, forcing the workers to demolition parts of the building to access the flames. Federal officials and homeland security stepped in after the county declared the fire an emergency.

The demolition and fire has officials concerned that asbestos may be being released into the air.

Asbestos is known to cause mesothelioma, a rare but aggressive cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, stomach or heart. The cancer is difficult to treat and there is no available cure.

The fire has caused no injuries.
