Father and Sons Sentenced on Asbestos Charges
Three Utica, NY men have been sentenced to prison time for illegally handling asbestos. Brothers Steven and Paul Mancuso, along with their father Lester were convicted of performing an illegal asbestos removal operation and subsequent cover-up.
Paul Mancuso, 45, is said to have illegally dumped asbestos in Poland, NY. His brother Steve, an attorney, then helped him forge documents to cover-up the operation. Lester Mancuso, 71, was involved as well.
The Mancusos were sentenced by Judge Fred Scullin in Federal Court Wednesday in Syracuse, NY. Paul Mancuso will serve six years, Steven Mancuso, 38, will serve 44 months and Lester will serve three years.
Asbestos is known to cause mesothelioma, a rare and deadly form of cancer. The disease develops when asbestos fibers enter the body and attack the lining of the lungs, stomach or heart. While there is no cure for mesothelioma, palliative treatments are available.
The Mancusos have until 2 p.m. on July 20 to turn themselves over to authorities and begin their sentences.
