Asbestos Discovery Slows Chicago Building Conversion

The conversion of former Hobart Middle School into a city center outside of Chicago has been delayed by the discovery of asbestos in the building.

The asbestos was found in the piping and concrete slabs in one section of the structure. In order to remove and properly dispose of the hazardous material Mayor Brian Snedecor has allocated $30,000 for asbestos abatement.

Asbestos exposure is known to cause mesothelioma, a form of cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, stomach or heart. The disease is often found in its advanced stages making it hard to treat and often fatal.

The Hobart School project is slightly ahead of schedule according to officials. Midwest Construction Services will be performing the abatement.
