asbestos_demolitionThe Mayo Group Development company is accused of violating certain provisions of the Clean Air Act.  Charges include two-counts of failure to notify the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection of intended asbestos abatement, two-counts of failing to comply with emissions control procedures when removing asbestos and one-count relating to the improper disposal of asbestos-containing materials.

Asbestos must be disposed of properly in order to limit the risk of exposure to dangerous asbestos fibers.  Such exposure may lead to the development of any one of a number of often fatal diseases.  Asbestos-caused diseases include but are not limited to mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis.

Due to the generally long latency period associated with such diseases there is only a very minimal chance of finding effective treatment options for those diagnosed.  In many cases by the time an asbestos-caused disease is discovered it is already well into advanced stages of development and the diagnosed only lives for a short time following initial diagnosis.

The charges against the Mayo Group are the result of an investigation conducted by both the Massachusetts Environmental Crimes Strike Force and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection as well as the Attorney General’s Office.

According to officials the company demolished areas of a building that contained asbestos while residents were living in the building at the time. The Mayo Group has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
