New Study Lists Deadliest Job In Denmark
A new study set out to find the deadliest job in Denmark, and had some surprising results. While in other countries, commercial fishing, logging, or firefighting might take the top spot, in Denmark, the most deadly job is one that not many Americans would find particularly dangerous. The new study’s aim was to find the profession in Denmark that had the highest rates of cancer. Researchers found that the job in Denmark that is most likely to give you cancer is waiting tables.
Strange but true, waiters in Denmark were found to have the highest risk for developing cancer in Nordic countries. The study, which was published in the journal Acta Oncologica, studied instances of cancer in Nordic countries over the past 45 years, a daunting task that examined nearly 15 million cancer cases. Researchers believe that the reason waiters had such an elevated risk for developing cancer was due to the relative ease with which they can smoke or drink while at work. The study found that waiters in Denmark had higher instances of cancer than waiters in other Scandinavian countries, such as Sweden or Norway.
These results are somewhat unexpected, given that professions that work with carcinogens on a daily basis were assumed to be more dangerous. However, while the study did confirm a correlation between professions that handle asbestos and other carcinogens regularly, waiters still had higher instances of cancer. This is surprising, as asbestos is known to pose health risks in other countries around the globe. Asbestos exposure is linked to lung cancer and mesothelioma, and professions such as shipbuilders, teachers, miners, and mechanics in other countries around the world are all considered to have an elevated risk of developing asbestos-related cancers.
