Missouri Summer School Relocates Due to Asbestos

A Missouri elementary school in Columbia has been forced to change the location of its summer school due to asbestos findings.

Parkade Elementary School was recently tested for asbestos and while most of the tests were negative, traces of asbestos were found in the building. To prevent exposure to students in the summer school program the district has moved the summer school from Parkade to nearby Derby Ridge Elementary.

The move will be the only change made to the summer school program and the district will provide bus transportation for the students to the new location.

Asbestos is known to cause mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer. Mesothelioma manifests in the lining of the lungs, heart or stomach after asbestos fibers are inhaled into the body. There is no cure to mesothelioma, making it a particularly dangerous cancer.

The asbestos abatement of Parkade will take place over the summer and is set to be completed by the start of the 2010-2011 school year.
