asbestoshandlingA demolition company located in Holland, Michigan is being accused of improperly handling asbestos-containing materials while leveling a building in the city of Wyoming, Michigan. According to officials H and M Demolition Company failed to follow environmental codes regarding asbestos-containing materials that are set out to prevent exposure to the dangerous substance.

Exposure to materials containing asbestos is known to result in the development of a number of deadly diseases which include but are not limited to mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. Because such diseases typically have such a long latency period finding effective treatment options is very difficult if not impossible. In most cases by the time an individual is diagnosed with an asbestos-caused disease it will already be in its advanced stages of development.

Scott and Jaline Tucker are also being accused of improperly handling dangerous material at the site of another job but this one located in the city of Holland.

Asbestos is present in many older buildings as the dangerous nature of the substance was not discovered until later into the twentieth century. During the 1970’s congress formed the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the government began to regulate the use of asbestos. Today certain regulations must be followed in order to prevent exposure to the toxic substance.

If the Tuckers are convicted of the felony charges filed against them they each face a prison sentence of up to five years as well as $250,000 in fines.
