Delaware School District Renovations Include Asbestos Abatement
Three schools in Delaware’s Cape Henlopen district are scheduled for revamping this summer. Topping the list is Milton Elementary School, which is in need of asbestos abatement.
Milton Elementary School features one of the only storage units in the district, yet the structure is contaminated with asbestos. The district relies on the storage shed and plans to have the asbestos removal completed by the end of the summer barring any financial complications.
The Cape Henlopen district has a total of $222,000 for minor renovations to be completed within a year. Yet with other projects in need of completion, including two cracked facades at two middle schools, school officials are concerned about the budget.
Asbestos has been found to cause mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer that attacks the lining of the lungs, stomach or heart. No cure presently exists for the disease but the cancer can be treated with chemotherapy or radiation.
In addition to the storage shed and middle school facades, the district also has plans to replace carpeting, gym dividers and partitions in the girl’s bathrooms in various schools.
