findlay1Clyde-Green Springs School District in Ohio has just received a contract with Quality Environmental Services for the removal of asbestos. The abatement is needed in both the South Main Elementary School and Clyde High School.

Asbestos was found and will be removed from the boiler room in Clyde High School and the flooring tiles of the Elementary School. The contract was given to the company with the lowest bid, and at $68,430, Quality Environmental Services was the chosen organization.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that poses a heath threat when airborne asbestos fibers are inhaled and become lodged in the soft tissue of the lungs. The exposure can lead to a number of diseases include asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma, a fatal form of cancer for which there is no cure. Approximately, 3,000 new asbestos-related illnesses are diagnosed annually in the United States.

Asbestos was commonly used in construction materials and shipyards for its high insulation qualities. Government regulations were implemented in the 1970’s once the hazardous effects of asbestos were discovered.

Construction documents for both of the schools have been approved by the board and a copy of the district’s asbestos management plan is on file and available to parents and community members at the Buildings and Grounds office. The cost is 25 cents per page.

The school district has reported the “Annual Asbestos Notification” report on their website for those interested. The most recent report has said there “were no significant changes” in the asbestos-containing materials in the district buildings.
