Asbestos Ups Demolition Bid at Boston School
Boston city officials increased the allowance for demolition of the old Newton North High School last week from $4 million to $10 million after asbestos was found throughout the building.
The 37-year old structure was found to contain asbestos, lead, mercury and PCBs. The asbestos abatement was awarded to Costello Dismantling of Middleborough with a bid of $7.6 million.
The new Newton North High School is scheduled to open this fall next to the old structure. The building was part of a $197.5 million construction project of the high school.
Asbestos exposure can cause mesothelioma, a rare and deadly form of cancer. The disease develops when asbestos fibers enter the body and attack the lining of the lungs, stomach or heart. The cancer has no cure but can be treated with chemotherapy or radiation.
The demolition of the old building will begin in early July and is set to be completed by March of 2011.
