A complete renovation of North Tonawanda Middle School in Tonawanda, New York has many parents, students and staff concerned for their health and well being. A presentation was held at the school May 7th to lessen concerns and discuss the methods that will be used to ensure safety during the school’s asbestos abatement procedure.
The renovations will include the instillation of electronic Smartboards, adding connections for computers, changing lighting systems and installing new lockers. With all of the renovations, asbestos containing floor tiles, window caulk and insulation has the potential to be disturbed and released into the air.
Chris Stohl, of Stohl Environmental, spoke to parents and staff about the requirements and procedures that will be followed. To begin with, each room that is undergoing abatement will have each entry point covered in two layers of thick plastic to prevent asbestos exposure. Because harm from asbestos comes from airborne fibers, it is more easily contained than radiation or chemicals that release toxic fumes said Stohl. “It will not go through a solid object. It will not go through plastic or tape.”
Other procedures that will be followed is to wet all tiles and material that will be removed to prevent the fiber from becoming airborne. Also, fans with HEPA-filter systems will be in the room to trap in air and only allow for clean air to be pushed out of the room’s windows. These fans also serve to protect the rest of the building by keeping air in the room undergoing abatement. Air monitors outside and throughout he building will constantly test air quality. No area will reopen until rigorous testing is completed.
Construction in the classrooms is not scheduled to begin until after school lets out for summer vacation but some abatement will occur in the computer lab and music room around May 18th. However, seals will be in place and no work will be done when students are in the building. Air tests will be conducted daily before school starts and if testing shows the air is not safe, school will be closed until the air is deemed safe to breathe. The total renovation is expected to continue through September and then resume summer 2010.
